population density was 83 people per square mile (32/km²). There were 39,928 housing units at an average density of 32 per square mile (12/km²). The racial makeup of the parish was 74.07%
White, 17.79%

African American, 5.29%
Native American, 0.81%
Asian, 0.02%
Pacific Islander, 0.54% from
other races, and 1.48% from two or more races. 1.56% of the population were
Hispanic or
Latino of any race. 10.66% reported speaking
French or
Cajun French at home, while 1.5% speak
Spanish.

There were 35,997 households out of which 39.20% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.00% were
married couples living together, 14.10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.90% were non-families. 19.30% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.30% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.86 and the average family size was 3.29.
In the parish the population was spread out with 29.20% under the age of 18, 10.10% from 18 to 24, 29.80% from 25 to 44, 21.10% from 45 to 64, and 9.70% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 96.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.10 males.
The median income for a household in the parish was $35,235, and the median income for a family was $39,912. Males had a median income of $34,869 versus $20,705 for females. The
per capita income for the parish was $16,051. About 15.80% of families and 19.10% of the population were below the
poverty line, including 25.90% of those under age 18 and 17.60% of those age 65 or over.
